Capital Football has named its squad for the National Women’s Futsal League competition, which is being held at the ASB Sports Centre in Wellington on 24-26 February.
A number of the players will be known to the local footballing community following the Federation’s successful National Women’s League campaign in 2016. According to Todd Bryant, Capital’s Futsal Development Officer, the players are very excited about the opportunity and are hoping they can carry their success onto the futsal court.
The team also boasts a new face to the Wellington scene with Danielle Calautti, who recently moved over from Perth where she played Futsal in the state league as well as football for Perth Glory.
Despite it being a young team, co-coach Alex Brodie says the team is focused and has been training well in the lead up to the weekend’s competition.
‘All of the players understand the commitment required for this type of competition’, says Bryant, who see the Women’s Futsal National League as a great chance to showcase the women’s game in the Capital.
The team also includes recent international U17 representatives Maggie Jenkins and Francesca Grange, who along with a number of other players in the squad are eligible for the under 19 Youth National Tournament in July this year.
The competition this weekend includes teams from the seven NZF Federations, as well as the Bayside Pirates, a guest team from Victoria, Australia. The Capital team face the Pirates first up on Friday 24 February. Kick off is at 12pm
The team is hoping for a lot of support from its home crowd and they should get it for their first game with Capital running a number of Futsal festivals as part of the ‘FIFA Live Your Goals’ campaign.
The festivals will be run throughout the week in the lead up to the tournament with players from a number of schools in the region learning some new skills. ‘It’s a means to get more females involved in Futsal and Football’ says Emma Evans, Women’s Development Officer at Capital Football. ‘We have over 1000 girls registered for the week and it is a great opportunity for these younger players to see the top female futsal players in the country perform’.
The National Women’s Futsal League kicks off on Friday 24 February at ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie and runs through until Sunday 26 February.
