BOTTOM TEAMS PROVIDE SHOCK WINS

Havelock North Wanderers and Waterside Karori have produced upset 2-1 wins to add a new level of intrigue to the Ultra Football Central League relegation battle.

Karori got the better of Wairarapa United at Karori Park on Saturday thanks to a brace from their leading scorer, Ryan Cain.

Wairarapa got a goal back through Shakille Belle 11 minutes from time. The same player missed the chance for an equaliser from the penalty spot in injury time which would have earned his side a point, despite playing the last eight minutes with 10 men after Seule Soromon was given his marching orders.

Havelock North toppled Wellington Olympic in Wellington following goals from Ethan Dent and Gagame Feni after Christian Baz had opened the scoring for the hosts in the 17th minute.

Those two teams moved to six points with their wins, one point behind Miramar Rangers, with three points to Olympic and four to Wairarapa.
Miramar will be left wondering what should have been against Stop Out on Saturday after going up 2-0 in the first 35 minutes, only to lose 5-2. Luis Corrales scored a hat-trick for Stop Out as they moved to outright second on 16 points, five adrift of leaders Napier City Rovers.

Rovers were too good for Lower Hutt City on Sunday, winning 5-2 after another brace to Martin Bueno, who moved one clear in the Golden Boot race, while Western Suburbs beat Wellington United 3-0 in the round’s other match.

In the Capital Premier division, North Wellington extended their lead to nine points, although didn’t have things all their own way in a 4-3 win over Upper Hutt City. New Golden Boot leader Maksym Kowal netted a hat-trick, including the winner in the 83rd minute.

Petone moved to second with their 3-2 win over Olympic’s reserves, while there were also wins for Tawa and Kapiti Coast United. The other game saw Western Suburbs’ reserves and Miramar’s reserves draw 3-3.

In the W-League, a three-horse race is starting to develop, with Wellington United the leaders of the front trio.

They kept their five-point buffer over Upper Hutt City and Wairarapa United intact with a 6-0 win over Western Suburbs. Danielle Ohlsson grabbed a hat-trick for Wellington.

Upper Hutt continued their resurgence with a 4-1 victory over Seatoun, although got an almighty shock when the winless visitors took a second-minute lead through a Grace Surridge goal. Kennedy Bryant struck a hat-trick to ensure her side walked away with the three points.

Wairarapa were also in top form, scoring seven second-half goals in an 8-1 win over Palmerston North Marist.

In the Women’s Premier League, Waterside Karori went three points clear at the top after a 4-1 win over fellow early-season pacesetters Victoria University.

Wellington United’s reserves joined University on 12 points thanks to their 3-1 win over Brooklyn Northern United, while Petone and Kapiti Coast United scored big wins over Island Bay United and Stop Out respectively.
