WESTERN SUBURBS INTO CHATHAM CUP SEMIFINALS

Western Suburbs have gone through to the Chatham Cup semifinals with a 4-1 victory over defending champions Onehunga Sports.

The news was not so good for Wairarapa United, who fell 2-1 to 2016 champions Birkenhead United on Saturday night.

But at Waikaraka Park in Auckland, Wests came out of the blocks quickly, establishing a 3-0 lead in the first 30 minutes.

Tom Boss pulled a goal back for Onehunga before halftime, but the hosts then had two players sent off in the second 45 minutes, ending any chance of a comeback. Callum McCowatt completed the win in the 87th minute with his second goal and his team’s fourth.

The semifinal draw will take place on Tuesday, with Wests and Birkenhead joined by Christchurch’s Cashmere Technical and Nelson Suburbs.

In local women’s knockout action, Wellington United, Wairarapa United, Upper Hutt City and Waterside Karori all won through to the semifinals of the Kelly Cup.

Upper Hutt’s game against Seatoun was the most thrilling. It ended 3-3, with Upper Hutt going on to take the tie 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

The Executive Plate semifinalists were also found, with North Wellington represented by two teams, who will be joined by Victoria University's seconds and the Island Bay United Sharkettes in the final four.

There was league action for the men in the top two divisions as well.

Napier City Rovers continued their push to the Central League title with a 3-0 win over Lower Hutt City. That leaves them needing only a point from their final game against Wairarapa United on August 18 to secure the title, should Wests win their final two games.

Havelock North Wanderers were unable to lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder, going down 3-2 to Wellington Olympic at Guthrie Park. Gavin Hoy got the winner for the visitors in the 75th minute.

Miramar Rangers and Stop Out played out an entertaining match at David Farrington Park. Stop Out led 4-1 in the 69th minute thanks to a Jerram Tuck hat-trick, but four goals in the final 20 minutes saw Miramar win 5-4.

In the Capital Premier division, Island Bay United ensured their survival with a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Kapiti Coast United.

But Olympic’s reserves also lost 2-1, to Petone, meaning them and Kapiti sit level on 16 points in second-last - the potential second relegation position - with one game to go. Kapiti hold a three-goal advantage in goal difference.

Lower Hutt’s reserves were relegated after they lost 3-2 to Tawa - Soh Reh La bagged a hat-trick for Tawa.

Other results saw North Wellington beat Upper Hutt City 3-1 thanks to a Kiernan Hughes-Mason hat-trick, while Western Suburbs’ reserves beat Miramar’s reserves 5-3.
