Capital Football, Team Wellington Youth, National Youth League

As many of you will be aware CF entered into an agreement with TW midway through 2018 to take over run & financially contribute to the running of TWY for 2018 & 2019; this being the last year of the National Youth League in its current guise.

In conjunction with the Head Coach of TW the appointment of the Assistant Coach of TWY for 2019 was to be agreed upon however the Head Coach was to be CF Assistant Federation Development Manager Natalie Lawrence, an Oceania A Licenced coach who coached the team in 2018; a two year appointment had already been agreed upon. Trials were to take place & last year 104 players from 13 clubs trialled & 7 clubs were represented in the final squad selected; only one CF affiliated club declined to be part of the trial process.

Unfortunately, during last week TW have advised CF that they are now no longer willing to complete the second year of the agreement. This surprising turn of events was discussed at the recent CF Board meeting of 15 July & subsequently the Board has written to TW informing them that given the proposed change in parameters explained to CF that unfortunately we would not be able to continue & therefore were notifying TW that CF was withdrawing from the arrangement.

The Board of CF is obviously disappointed as the arrangement worked well last year & CF were looking forward to being involved again. TW assures CF that a fair & transparent selection process will be undertaken.

Regardless of what happens when the National League Review is released by NZ Football in September the Board of CF is concerned about the potential lack of opportunity in this key age group & have asked the management to explore options for consideration.

As many of you will also be aware CF imposed a representative levy of $2.50 per player (approx. $30k inclusive of GST) to assist with the running of TWY. The Board of CF have advised TW that this money is no longer available for any expenses incurred with TWY & rather the money will be carried forward into 2020 & the National Women’s League levy will not be applied next year. The money collected for TWY will be reclassified in the 2019 accounts as “income in advance”.

Should you have any further queries on this matter please do not hesitate to be in contact.
