Many of Wellington’s football teams are in for a busy Queen’s Birthday weekend of action with league and cup games taking place in in the space of three days.
The Women’s Premier League teams might fancy their chances against their W-League foes in the Kate Sheppard Cup on Monday, with their league halted for the weekend due to their games being on a Sunday.
That means Kapiti Coast United, Waterside Karori and Victoria University will all be rested for their clashes against Upper Hutt City, Seatoun and Wellington United respectively.
WPL leaders Karori stand the biggest chance of claiming a W-League scalp against winless Seatoun, although Seatoun have been better than their record suggests.
The other match is an all-W-League clash between Wairarapa United and Palmerston North Marist in Masterton.
In Saturday’s W-League matches, Wellington United look to keep their perfect record intact against Seatoun, while second plays third when Wairarapa host Upper Hutt. Palmerston North and Western Suburbs meet in the final match of the round at Endeavour Park.
Saturday’s men’s league action sees top meeting bottom in the Ultra Football Central League.
The bottom two of Havelock North Wanderers and Waterside Karori host second-placed Stop Out and leaders Napier City Rovers respectively.
A slip up for either away side would allow third-placed Western Suburbs or fourth-placed Wellington United to gain ground on the leaders. That duo also face away tests against Lower Hutt City and Miramar Rangers.
The final match of the round see Wairarapa United host Wellington Olympic.
The focus will then switch to the Chatham Cup on Monday.
There are two all-Central League clashes as Havelock North host Wests and Wairarapa visit Wellington United.
There will be three Capital Premier teams out to prove they can foot it with Central League opposition. Island Bay United meet the club they share Wakefield Park with in Olympic, Upper Hutt City take on Napier and Kapiti Coast United play Karori.
The task is a fair bit tougher for Capital 1’s Wainuiomata, who welcome Stop Out to Richard Prouse Park.
Capital Premier leaders North Wellington tussle with Capital 1 leaders, Victoria University, while the weekend is rounded out by Lower Hutt playing last season’s relegated Central League club Palmerston North Marist.
