With the season well underway, please see the below update from Capital Football regarding the NZF Talent Developoment Programme and friendly reminder that applications close 5pm Friday 30th August 2019.
The NZF Talent Development Programme is an opportunity for clubs to be recognised when offering talent sessions to youth players (13 to 17 years old) and we have five clubs provisionally running Talent Development Programme’s alongside Capital Football:
Island Bay United (Boys only)
Miramar Rangers (Boys only)
North Wellington/Onslow Junior (Girls & Boys)
Waterside Karori (Boys only)
Wellington United (Girls & Boys)
Capital Football hosts three of its own boys Talent Development Programme sessions where there isn’t currently capability: Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Wairarapa. Capital Football also hosts one girl’s Talent Development Programme and one girl’s Talent Acceleration Programme.
What does this mean?
Players within each of these environments has been receiving regular training sessions to recognised standards, at quality facilities, delivered by high quality coaches. These standards are driven nationwide to ensure a consistency of delivery meaning that the players receive a quality experience.
What next for the Talent Development Programme Clubs?
Player development is a continuous process and the Talent Development Programme is seeking to develop more better players over a longer period of time. Players will continue to receive consistent and quality sessions throughout the year. Capital Football is actively working with each of the clubs to ensure that this is the case.
Players within the 13th and 14th grade boys Talent Development Programme environments will have the opportunity to partake against each other in the Youth Premier League in September. The top two teams of each grade will also play a final series against our neighbours from Central Football.
Where do we want to get to in 2020?
Capital Football would like to see those clubs delivering provisionally approved Talent Development Programmes signed off at the end of the year. We would also like to see more clubs successfully achieve Talent Development Programme status to keep driving the standards of the game upwards in the Capital Football region.
The Talent Development Programme initiative has been a significant step forward in evolving the talent pathway for youth players. To further enhance this, we now see it as hugely important that the training sessions players receive through the Talent Development Programme is now linked to competition. In 2020 Capital Football would like to offer dedicated Talent Development Programme Leagues which run through the winter.
Entry into the Talent Development Programme Leagues will be a requirement of running a club Talent Development Programme. Players will only continue to improve by playing games in quality environments as well as training sessions. Players will therefore be receiving quality coaching, training and games to recognised standards. This would be for the 17th grade boys, 14th/15th grade boys and 13th grade boys.
The girl’s game is evolving at a different pace and there isn’t currently the depth to offer the same format. We will be continuing to work to bring about positive developments to the girl’s game as was introduced this year with the Capital Football Talent Acceleration Programme. We will work with the Talent Development Programme clubs and the Women’s and Junior Advisory Groups to establish a suitable pathway for talented girls in 2020.
How can new clubs get involved?
The Talent Development Programme is not for all clubs. The standards associated are deliberately high as we strive to offer the best possible experience for our youth players. Clubs are welcome to run the Talent Development Programme on their own if they meet the criteria, but we also encourage clubs to be creative in how they partner with other clubs to best meet the standards.
By stating our desire to run a dedicated Talent Development Programme League, Capital Football is clear in its vision that players will benefit from playing together, in minimal environments, with highly qualified coaches. This means players training together and then playing together on the game day.
We encourage clubs to speak with Capital Football prior to submitting an application form to run a Talent Development Programme for 2020 to fully understand the implications involved.
How does this fit into the national talent pathway?
New Zealand Football is seeking to provide an aligned structure to meet the needs of players across all levels of the game. The talent pathway offers players who are showing potential additional football with a higher level of competition. The provision involves players being challenged appropriately in minimal environments, enhancing their opportunity of further development.
