Three young football officials from Paraparaumu College successfully managed a crucial Women's Capital Premier League match on Sunday. Will Pugh, Rhys Baker, and Carter Madge, all under the age of 16, took charge of the game between Te Kotahitanga Women’s Firsts and Wellington United Sapphires, marking their first three-point control match without the presence of senior referees.
The visiting Wellington United Sapphires, sitting at the top of the league, faced a determined Te Kotahitanga side eager to overturn their 5-1 defeat from earlier in the season and boost their promotion hopes. The match was intensely competitive, with Wellington United reduced to ten players in the second half following a red card. Despite a valiant effort and a late opportunity to secure a win, Te Kotahitanga had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Observers were highly impressed with the young referees' performance. Their ability to handle the pressures of such a significant game has generated much excitement about their future potential in the sport.
The appointment of assistant referees, made possible by sponsorship from QuickSet, was a notable feature of this match. Such appointments are rare in the Women’s Capital Premier League and also extend to the Te Kotahitanga Men’s Reserve team in Capital 2, thanks to the support of QuickSet.
The promising trio from Paraparaumu College has set a high standard for young officials and looks forward to many more successful officiating assignments in the future.
