Wednesday evening saw college Futsal in the Wairarapa kick off for the first time. Based at the refurbished Colombo Road Netball Centre teams were treated to playing on the brand-new surface.
The College League, in its first term in the Wairarapa, will be run at a centralised quality covered facility at Colombo Road; is not weather dependent (no cancellations), there is no officiating responsibilities – this is supplied by Capital Football – “walk in, walkout”, and is played over a six-week period.
Capital Football Futsal Development Officer, Callum Holmes, is leading this project for Capital Football and encourages all interested players in the Wairarapa to get involved:
“There is a reason why Futsal is the fastest growing indoor sport in New Zealand, players fall in love with the game as soon as they give it a go. We are really excited to finally bring Futsal to the Wairarapa and develop the sport with the help of the community”.
Running alongside the league will be ‘informal’ drop in games for any College students who don’t have a team but want to experience Futsal for the first time. Students can turn up and play against other players from 4.30-6.30pm each Wednesday (27th March – 3rd April).
Former Kuranui College student and Capital Football Women’s SuperLeague team member Dani Turton is working with Capital on this project and believes this is a huge step for the sport in the Wairarapa region:
“I am excited that Capital Football are bringing Futsal over to the Wairarapa and it is great that I can be a part of this new initiative. Futsal is an exciting game, fast, fun, social, and caters to all abilities”.
